‘YOU SEE I AM HERE AFTER ALL’
Curatorial text by Livia Lazzarini
In November 2022, Villa Filanda Antonini launched an open call for artists. Seven winning artists were selected to participate over a six-month period in the residency program at the Villa. During their stay, the artists were asked to develop works inspired by the territory of Treviso and its unique characteristics. The current group show represents the outcome of their creative process.
Abandoned spaces have forgotten histories. Once a spinning mill then a paper factory, the warehouse of VFA invites visitors to engage with the transformative power of spaces left behind.
The title, You see I am here after all, expresses the quiet hope to bring new life to the area, while simultaneously pointing to the unconventional practice of curating a residency after the artists have left, building it on their longing. Lack in this sense means having space to create new realities of appreciation and connections, allowing us the extra space to redefine and reinterpret realities from a distance.
The exhibition transforms from room to room as visitors encounter works by seven artists, each grappling with the landscape of Treviso. Incorporating natural materials and techniques, playing in contrast to industrial objects. The elements all recur in tones that evoke a sense of the passage of time: rust, soil, and copper oxide.
As visitors traverse the exhibition, they are immersed in a world where ruins establish a regime of visibility – demanding attention, observation, and exploration, and inviting them to reimagine the narratives woven into the fabric of abandonment.
