Katja Farin
Katja Farin’s practice ranges from large to small scale oil paintings, ceramics and printmaking. Farin’s work depicts the interactions between the subconscious and reality. In the paintings, the relationship between figures is uncertain; the everyday life of sitting at coffee shops, wandering in gardens, and domestic life becomes the backdrop for the internal dialogue with the self that interrogates lived traumas, coping mechanisms, dimensional shifts, dreams and their distortions. Figures hold one another, shifting emotional weight and labor between each other. Bright colors, emotionally charged and nihilistic expressions, androgynous bodies and dysphoric space create bright textured paintings that encour- age the viewer to see themselves as one of these figures. Farin’s ceramics connect the world of the paintings to the space of the viewer. Their spikes are a fragile armour that seemingly protect the objects illumination or reflection but their fragility fails them. The trickster archetype is key to the work. It is a tool that is used throughout Farin’s practice to explore connection to the otherworld, transition, and obscure right and wrong. This creates a hopeful prismatic view of truth and reality.
