Theo Alexander
Composer
b. 1989, London, UK) He is a Chinese-Malaysian/British composer currently based in Prague, Czech Republic. His intricate, densely textured compositions often use deliberately synthetic elements, such as heavily-processed cassette recordings or ‘two dimensional’ sounding electronic instruments, which are blended in a delicate balance with live, ‘organic’ parts.
Alexander recently began working in the format of the installed composition, a medium that brings together site-specific installation, music, and movement. Previously, he has created installed compositions for a 1950s former telephone exchange and a 19th century farm complex in Bohemia, both locations that resonate with his frequent themes of technology, control, and the complex relationship of humankind to the natural world. His first three albums were released by Canadian independent label, Arts & Crafts, and he has previously been hosted as a resident artist by Britten-Pears Arts. He founded his own cassette label imprint, Cellar Tapes, in 2016. His music has been featured and discussed on NPR, WNYC New Sounds, Bandcamp Daily, Electronic Sound, and many more.
Theo Alexander was one of the winners of the first Open Call announced by Villa Filanda Antonini in 2023. A guest of the artist residency program, he lived and worked in the villa, creating a site-specific sound composition presented during The Greater Field Premiere, June 9, 2023.
